Daniel Casares (ES)
Jazz / Lo-fi / Psychedelic
Daniel Casares is a guitarist, composer and producer from Galicia, Spain. He began studying classical guitar at age 10, and by 15 he started to produce original music. After finishing high school he moved to Boston to study at the Berklee College of Music, where he was introduced to jazz and set to become an improviser, inspired by figures such as John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Kurt Rosenwinkel, or Warne Marsh. Daniel graduated from Berklee in 2018 and briefly relocated to New York City before heading back to Galicia, where he has been active as a performer, educator, and recording artist.
Daniel’s style as a guitarist is energetic and creative, deeply rooted in the jazz tradition of the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’s. As a composer and producer, the artist explores a colorful DIY jazz sonority with nods to rock, hip hop, pop, and the avant-garde. On “Villa Bonita” Daniel disposes of the guitar and delivers a keyboard-led set of original compositions. The EP features inventive interplay between synthesizers, electric bass, and drums over haunting mellotron textures. The compositional style on the record is heavily informed by North-American popular music, while maintaining a personal voice and distinctive aesthetics.
The artist’s second HOUT Records release “From a Cabin in the Woods” (releases 20.10.23) delivers a full-length effort in a fresh avant-garde jazz style inspired by psychedelic rock, folk, and classic free jazz that features rich textures, energetic rhythm section performances, and probing improvisations on the guitar, EWI, and synthesizer. The album travels through different instrumentations and sonorities, all rooted together by their connection to popular music.
